HYDROGEL FILMS: Thickness  measurement

Measured reflectance spectrum of the hydrogel film on glass slide.using MProbe 20VisHR system. Fringes indicate interference in hydrogel layer and in glass slide. Measurement can be done either from the top or the bottom

Hydrogel films are used in many applications. One type of  interesting application are  biosensors where control of the hydrogel film thickness is important, such as fluorescence based hydrogel sensor. In  other sensor,  such as Aptamer based DNA hydrogel film sensor, the  thickness measurement is used for detection of the target protein.

Hydrogels have high concentration of water but they also also have particles and gel formations that can cause light scattering. For good optical measurement, it is important to optimize the spot size and MProbe 20 has a perfect match for this measurement.

Hydrogel film thickness during process development can be very non-uniform. MProbe system allows to measure thickness distribution quickly to help process optimization. The measurements analysis is using proprietary algorithm based FFT –  this reduces the need for calibration and make it well suited for inline measurements in production. MProbe system can provide continuous in-line thickness monitoring 24/7 with data output over TCP or in analog form(for PLC integration)

In most cases, MProbe 20 Vis provides optimal thickness range for hydrogel films but, for thicker films, MProbe20 VisHR can be used instead (see specificaiton)
