          Thin polyester coating is used to protect steel sheets, used for hi-tech manufacturing,  from corrosion.  Testing of  coating thickness and uniformity is  important to ensure the specified performance of the coating. This testing is, typically, done offline for adjustment of manufacturing process.

MProbeVis-MSP offers a quick, accurate and non-destructive method to measure the thickness of polyester films.  

Polyester films thickness is notoriously difficult to measure using optical non-destructive methods. The main reason is the texture and micro-nonuniformity of the coating.

In case of non-transparent high-scattering coating, NIR range (MProbeNIR-MSP wavelength 900-1700nm) need to used with the small spot. MProbe MSP system allows to localize the measurement in a small spot.  Advance data analysis of the measured data reduces the effects of measurement artifacts  due to texture and allows extraction of the thickness data. 

Why use MProbe MSP system?

  •  the small spot (~ 40 to 20 μm) is needed  to localize the measurement due to non-uniformity/texture of polyester coating. In case of high-scattering coating – NIR wavelength range need to be used
  • Typical thickness of coating ~5-10 μm  is perfectly matching the MProbeVis or MProbeNIR MSP system thickness range.
  • Image of the measurement site and the reticle indicating the exact location of measurement makes it easy to navigate to desired location.
  • Results can be displayed directly on the image.
  • 400nm -1000nm wavelength range is best suited for these measurements
