 COATING THICKNESS MEASUREMENT ON PCBA

Coating thickness measurement is an important step in PCBA quality control. Different conformal coatings are applied during PCBA manufacturing, depending on specification requirements.

The coatings range from a simple water soluble dust protection (typically < 20μm)  to specialized hydrophobic coatings (<1 μm).

It is common to use test coupons to verify the thickness of the coating. The problem is that there is, typically, significant difference between the coating thickness on coupon and actual product. MProbeVis MSP enables measurement of the coating thickness directly on electronic components.   The measurement can be done on different areas of the PCBA, including on SMT elements surface to verify uniformity and thickness of the coating.  Measuring coating thickness directly on PCBA makes a big difference in yield of the final product. The measurement is, typically, done using 40 μm or 20 μm measurement spot in the Visible/Vis-NIR range (400-1000 nm).

Why use MProbeVis MSP?

  • small spot  is required for direct measurement on PCBA and the  spot size needs to be adjusted. Typically, ~ 20 to 40 μm spot size for measurement of on PCB and ~ 10 -20μm on top of SMT components. MProbeVis has up to 4 objectives and calibration can be stored for different configurations.
  • Image of the measurement site and the reticle indicating the exact location of measurement makes it easy to navigate to desired location.
  • Results can be displayed directly on the image.
  • 400nm -1000nm wavelength range works well for most  PCBA applications.
